E-driving licences set for next month

The Department of Land Transport (DLT) plans to introduce digital driving licences next month for the convenience of both motorists and law enforcement.

Peraphon Thawornsupacharoen, director-general of the DLT, said the licences will be registered within a new application which will be made available on both Android and iOS devices.

The virtual licences will be legally acceptable to show to traffic police, who will verify the information by scanning a QR code.

He said the digital licences will display all the usual information as well as blood group, social welfare, medical history and traffic tickets and offences. In-app alerts will be sent when the licences are about to expire.

The licences and app are expected to be launched in the middle of next month, he said.

The digital format will cover both personal cars and public transportation.

According to Mr Peraphon, the digital licences mirror the way that electronic banking is being increasingly used instead of visiting a bank's premises.

Meanwhile, the DLT is also urging the passengers of inter-provincial buses to download an application so they can access necessary information to better plan their travel.

Known as the "Smart Bus Terminal" system, the application is part of the DLT's efforts to provide convenience to passengers using services at any of its 81 bus terminals across the country.

The application allows the users to access bus schedules, estimated arrival and departure times, platform numbers and bus routes on their phones, according to the department chief.

He said the "Smart Bus Terminal" system has been developed following the installation of the GPS tracking systems on public buses as required by the DLT.

The system is in use nationwide, with the latest terminals added to the list being Krabi and the second terminals in Nakhon Ratchasima and Phitsanulok.
