Floodwaters were receding in Nakhon Si Thammarat province on Monday and had stopped rising in Narathiwat, Patthalung and Surat Thani provinces, but a close flood watch was being kept in Chumphon, where there was continuing steady rain.

Thongplew Kongjun, director-general of the Royal Irrigation Department, said flooding in Muang district of Nakhon Si Thammarat peaked about 8pm on Sunday with the water at depths of 30-50 centimetres, and was now subsiding. Local officials were using pumps to accelerate drainage.

About 20 local schools were still closed and a 10-year-old child was missing in Cha-uat district.

Main roads and Nakhon Si Thammarat airport were usable, but Bangkok-Nakhon Si Thammarat train services were suspended due to flooding of the tracks in Ron Phibul district.

In Narathiwat province, there was flooding in low-lying areas near the Kolok River in Sungai Kolok municipal area. The floodwater was around 36cm deep, and stable. Communities in the municipality were not affected.

In Surat Thani province, farmland and communities were under 50-80 centimetres of water in Kanchanadit district. Commercial and urban areas were intact. The floodwater was expected to drain off in a few days.

In Phatthalung province, low-lying areas were flooded to a depth of 5-10cm in Khuan Khanun municipality of Khuan Khanun district.

However, in Chumphon officials were on standby in Lang Suan, Lamae and Phato districts as the rain was persistent there.

The Meteorological Department warned of further heavy rain in the lower South, extending over Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat provinces, brought by the strong northeasterly monsoon.
