A major fire early Wednesday destroyed about 10 old-style wooden homes near the Chao Phraya River in Bang Kholaem district of Bangkok, but there were no casualties.

The fire was reported at 3.20am on Wednesday, inside Charoen Krung 87 Road, an area of mostly low-income workers.

About 10 fire engines were mobilised to the packed community, which has narrow road and alley access through the Trok Rot alley off Charoen Krung 87. Residents ran for their lives carrying whatever possessions they could scoop up as flames spread quickly.

Firemen took an hour to bring the blaze under control and finally extinguished it.

Four people were treated for smoke inhalation and a fire fighter was injured when he fell from a roof.

Police were investigating the cause of the fire.

FM 91 Traffic Pro radio carried this video of the fire on its website.
