University councillors escape asset declarations

The National Anti-Corruption Commission has decided to exempt university council chairs and members from having to declare their assets and liabilities, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said on Friday.

The NACC's decision followed an outcry by university council members who vowed to resign en masse if the law was passed.

A new regulation will be announced in a day or two, Mr Wissanu said.

Its earlier version, published in the Royal Gazette late last year, requires senior officials to declare their assets and liabilities.

Under the new rule, only university rectors and deputies will face this stipulation, Mr Wissanu said.

"I told them [the councillors] from the beginning not to panic, but some still wanted to resign," he said.

The government is preparing to find replacements for those who left their jobs, he added.
