Toxic smog levels soared in greater Bangkok's stagnant air on Tuesday morning with fine dust particle readings of 50-116 microgrammes, peaking in Samut Sakhon's Muang district.

The Pollution Control Department reported the levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometres or less in diameter per cubic metre of air in the past 24 hours. The safety threshold is at 50mcg.

Hazardous air pollution was reported along Kanchanaphisek Road in Bang Khunthian district, Bang Na sub-district of Bang Na district, Khlongchan sub-district of Bang Kapi district, Din Daeng sub-district and on Din Daeng Road in Din Daeng district, Rama IV Road in Pathumwan district, Intharaphithak Road in Thon Buri district, and Lat Phrao Road in Wang Thonglang district.

Toxic levels were also detected in tambon Bang Kruai of Bang Kruai district in Nonthaburi province; tambon Khlong Nueng of Khlong Luang district in Pathum Thani; tambon Song Khanong and tambon Talad of Phra Pradaeng district, tambon Pak Nam of Muang district, and tambon Bang Sao Thong of Bang Sao Thong district in Samut Prakan; and tambon Om Noi of Krathum Baen district in Samut Sakhon.

The department asked people to strictly refrain from using vehicles that emit black smoke, stop burning outside and reduce the use of private vehicles.

It warned the well-being of children, elderly people, pregnant women and those with chronic disease was at risk and they should stay inside.
