PATTAYA: The body of a heavily tattooed man of unknown nationality was found washed up on the beach of an island off Pattaya in the early hours of Wednesday.

The dead man, who was 160-165cm tall, was found at Hat Nuan beach on Koh Larn, part of tambon Nong Prue, said Pol Lt Col Piyapong Ensarn, inspector of tourist police.

The discovery was reported to police about 1am.

The man was wearing a black T-shirt and short pants. His back was covered by an elaborate tattoo of what appeared to be a stylized carp. The body had been in the sea at least 5-7 days, police said.

There were no obvious marks of physical assault on the decomposing body. Forensic officers collected samples before the body was sent to Bang Lamung Hospital before being moved to Police General Hospital for a full post-mortem examination.

Pol Lt Col Piyapong said investigators had not been able to establish the dead man's nationality or the cause of death. They were checking police records of missing people and records of missing tourists from embassies.

People with information that may assist in identifying the body were asked to contact tourist police or Pattaya police station.
