Hundreds more foreigners nabbed for visa offences

A total of 435 foreigners, all but six from Asian countries, were arrested for immigration offences in coordinated raids targetting 220 locations across the country in the early hours of Friday.

Eighty-seven Thais were also detained for other offences, bringing the total number of arrests to 522, Pol Maj Gen Ittiphol Itthisarnronnachai, deputy chief of the Immigration Bureau, said during a media briefing.

Combined teams of Chana Songkhram police, immigration, tourist police and other agencies descended on premises in Bangkok and other provinces.

Fifteen foreigners (5 from Myanmar, 4 from Cambodia, 3 from Laos, one each from Vietnam, India, and Denmark) were charged with overstaying their visas.

Another 287 (143 from Myanmar, 102 from Laos, 38 from Cambodia, 3 from India and one from Bangladesh) were charged with illegal entry.

Pol Maj Gen Ittiphol said the remaining 220  (87 Thais, 79 from Myanmar, 31 from Cambodia, 7 from China, 5 from Laos, 3 each from Vietnam and Turkey, and one each from Israel, India, the Philippines, Iraq, and another of unknown nationality) were charged with other offences.
