SONGKHLA: A migrant worker on a motorcycle was badly hurt when hit by a train at an unguarded railway crossing in Hat Yai district on Friday morning.

A No.45 special express train from Bangkok to Badang Besar hit the motorcyclist at an unofficial crossing with no barrier in tambon Phatong about 8.30am, police said.

The force of the crash threw the bike almost 10 metres from the crossing. The motorcyclist, Ah Muang Armay, 29, from Myanmar, sustained broken legs. He was rushed to Songklanagarind Hospital.

The train was not damaged and no passengers, mostly foreigners, were hurt.

Train driver Kittipong Pongsai, 50, told police the motorcyclist had stopped at the crossing as he approached. He saw the rider look over at some roadside vendors and then suddenly accelerate forward just as the train arrived at the crossing. Mr Kittipong said he had no chance of stopping.

After the crash, the train continued to Badang Pesar station in Sadao district.

Witnesses said there had been many accidents at the unguarded crossing, which is a shortcut to a nearby community.
