Its epicentre was along the upper part of the Phayao fault line, 21 kilometres underground near Ban Huay Kantha in tambon Thung Hua.

The earthquake caused some damage in the district and was felt in the nearby provinces of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Phayao, the bureau said. It did not immediately provide details regarding the extent of the damage.

Sommai Techawal, director-general of the Department of Mineral Resources, said 15 aftershocks were also felt.

He said local staff from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation were assessing damage and warning residents about further aftershocks.

According to the Wang Nua Disaster Rescue Association, several buildings including the offices of the Rong Kho Tambon Administrative Organisation suffered cracks. No injuries were reported as of press time.

Pairat Phomphai, the deputy chief of Wang Nua district, said he told local residents whose properties may have been damaged by the quake to report that to the district so compensation could be paid.

The strongest recorded temblor to ever hit Thailand was a 6.1-magnitude quake that shook Chiang Rai nearly five years ago on May 5, 2014.
