NAKHON RATCHASIMA: Burning of sugarcane fields has continued in this northeastern province despite a provincial police announcement that farmers burning sugarcane would face legal action and a campaign against the practice launched by the provincial governor.

The continued burning has left roads and communities blanketed in black smoke, making road travel dangerous and covering villages with ashes.

The threat of legal action and the campaign have been ignored.

On Sunday morning, smoke from nearby burning sugarcane fields reduced visibility in many villages in tambon Khok Kra Buang of Ban Luam district.

Nual Pruna, 73, a villager in Ban Luam district who suffers from allergies, said the smoke has worsened her condition. Other villagers are also suffering from respiratory problems.

She called for government agencies to take the problem more seriously.
