KHON KAEN: A fire broke out at a small factory producing curry paste in Muang district of this northeastern province on Sunday morning. The fire damaged the property but caused no casualties, police said.

Pol Capt Samai Chaibuala, a Muang police investigator, said that the fire broke out at about 9am at the factory, a two-storey building on Prachasamran road in the Khon Kaen municipal area.

Factory manager Amornrat Srinongnuch said the fire started soon after workers on the ground floor heard crackling noises from an electrical plug and a circuit breaker nearby. The fire quickly engulfed the ground floor and spread to the upper floor.

Firefighters from the Khon Kaen Municipality managed to put the fire under control in 30 minutes. The fire caused damage to machines and raw materials for producing curry paste on the ground floor, and burned down the upper wooden floor used as living quarters for workers.

The extent of the damage was being assessed. Nobody was hurt.

An investigation was underway to establish the cause of the fire.
