A couple were arrested on charges of public fraud totalling 50 million baht when they arrived for a special court hearing on a similar, earlier charge in Bangkok’s Bang Bon district on Tuesday.

Crime Suppression Division police detained Piyaporn Saesantia, 28, and Thosaphon Boonmanut, 29, in front of the Thon Buri Special Court in Bang Bon district.

The couple, wanted on arrest warrants issued by the Min Buri Court on Sept 26 last year, are accused of  luring people into investing in len share (play share), an online pyramid scheme promising an investment return of 20-50% per week.

More than 100 people had been taken in by the suspects in 2016 and 2017, with their losses totalling over 50 million baht, according to  Pol Col Wichak Tarom, CSD investigation chief.

The pair had earlier been charged by economic crime suppression police with similar offences that caused damages amounting to 120 million baht, said Pol Col Pichak. He did not give further details of the previous case.

After learning that the couple were due at Thon Buri Special Court, CSD investigators waited there to arrest them on Tuesday.

During interrogation, the suspects allegedly confessed that their customers had invested more than 5 million baht a day in the pyramid scheme.

The amount of money invested kept rising and they ran out of money to pay back to the investors.

They were later handed over to  Khannayao police station for legal action.
