City gets coronation makeover

Landscape improvements for His Majesty the King's coronation ceremonies in Bangkok will be completed by the end of April, Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang said on Tuesday.

The governor made the announcement after he chaired a meeting of agencies, including the armed forces, preparing for the historic event at City Hall.

The city has been beautifying landscape around the Grand Palace where the ceremonies will take place, as well as Ratchadamnoen Avenue and adjacent areas. The improvements include repainting bridges and lane divider lines on the roads, trimming hedges and trees and erecting commemorative road arches.

Pol Gen Aswin said the beautification is focused around the Grand Palace, a key landmark in His Majesty the King's ceremonial procession.

The governor said he estimated the work will be 80% complete by the end of this month and totally finished by the end of next month.

He added the Thai-Japanese youth centre in Din Daeng will be open for overnight stays for people from outside of Bangkok who are expected to arrive in droves for the coronation ceremonies between May 4-6.

City Hall expects about 100,000 people to flock to the Grand Palace and Sanam Luang as well as other spots along the route.

In other areas of Bangkok, large screens will be put up to relay live broadcasts of the coronation events.

Makeshift kitchens, operated by the Royal Household Bureau, the army and City Hall, will be set up to provide food for people gathered for the events, Pol Gen Aswin said.
