BURI RAM: A villager was found trampled to death by a wild elephant in a rubber plantation in Non Din Daeng district of this northeastern province on Sunday morning.

A team of police officers, accompanied by a doctor from Non Din Daeng Hospital and members of a local rescue unit, went to the rubber plantation near Ban Sap Khanueng in tambon Lam Nang Rong for examination.

Inside the plantation, the officials found the badly-crushed body of Suwat Wongwiset, 37, of Ban Sap Khanueng village, lying in a pool of blood. His clothes were torn apart. A bicycle was found lying on the ground about 100 metres from the body.

It was believed Suwat was riding the bicycle past the plantation when he was attacked by a wild elephant foraging for food.

Suwat's body was brought by his relatives to the village for a religious rite.
