The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) will start providing free shuttle bus services on Wednesday, the first day the public is allowed to take photos featuring a large structure depicting the royal emblem for the coronation of His Majesty the King at Sanam Luang.
The structure, which is five metres in width and length and 5.7 metres in height, has being installed at Sanam Luang, adding to the spectacle of celebrations ahead of ceremonies, which will be spread over three days from Saturday to Monday.
Public transport services will increase in frequency to accommodate the tens of thousands of people who are expected to travel from across the country to witness His Majesty the King's coronation ceremonies and pay their respects in the capital this weekend. It is estimated that more than 150,000 people will flock to Sanam Luang and surrounding areas near the Grand Palace during the historic coronation ceremonies.
Transport inspector-general Witthaya Yamuang said the Transport Ministry will also provide free services on third-class trains over the weekend and the public are urged to contact local train stations to obtain the free tickets.
Those who use private vehicles are urged to park their vehicles at designated car parks in the outer areas and take public transport to the inner areas where the celebrations are being held, he said, adding that the BMTA has made preparations to shuttle passengers.
Passenger boats will also be provided free of charge during the coronation period. Boats travelling from Nonthaburi will drop passengers off at Pin Klao Bridge, while those from Sathon pier will drop passengers at Yod Phiman pier near Pakklong Talad flower market.
Sakhon Rungsawat, a BMTA senior official, said that between May 2-4 shuttle buses will be provided on 17 routes from various locations such as Muang Thong Thani, Future Park Rangsit, Mega Bang Na, and King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) to the celebration areas and back.
