UBON RATCHATHANI: A three-months pregnant Chinese woman and her unborn baby miraculously survived after she fell about 30 metres from a cliff in the Pha Taem National Park in Khong Chiam district on Sunday.
Wang Nan, 32, suffered fractures in her left thigh, left arm, left collar bone, hip bone and knees and scrapes on her face after she fell 34 metres from a viewpoint. She and her husband had visited the cliff, famous for its rock paintings, to see the sun rise on Sunday morning.
Her husband Yu Xiaodong, 33, said the couple were from southeastern Jiangsu province and had come to Thailand on a business trip, buying Thai products for sale in China. They took time out for a holiday, and arrived in the northeastern province last Friday.
While on the Pha Taem cliff, Mr Yu left his wife to use a toilet at a tourist service centre about 80 metres from the viewpoint. When he walked back, his wife had disappeared.
He then returned to his car to retrieve his phone, but his wife did not answer his calls. Assuming she had left the cliff some other way, he drove away -- but then noticed an ambulance speeding along the road. Fearing the worst, he followed, and learnt that his wife had fallen from the cliff.
Pol Col Chanchai Innara, chief of the Khong Chiam police station, said on Monday that Mrs Wang apparently passed out due to her pregnancy and tumbled off the cliff. Fortunately her fall was broken by trees. A Thai tourist saw her lying wounded on a trail and called for help. The Chinese woman was admitted to Sapphasitthiprasong Hospital in Muang district and underwent an operation.
Ten years ago a young man jumped off the cliff to his death while drunk after his friends challenged his courage.
