The Criminal Court yesterday ordered the extradition of a Canadian national facing a murder charge in the United States.

The extradition was sought by the Office of the Attorney-General's International Affairs Department against Matthew Alexander McGowan.

Mr McGowan is accused of fatally shooting another person in September 2017 in Florida.

According to prosecutors, this is an emergency case which meets requirements set out in the extradition treaty between Thailand and the US as well as Section 10 of the Extradition Act.

Mr McGowan was arrested in Thailand in November last year and bail requests have been rejected.

The US sought his extradition soon after his arrest but Mr McGowan has refused to be extradited.

According to the court, accounts given by Miami police and prosecutors in Florida handling the case as well as an image of the suspect captured in CCTV footage strongly point to Mr McGowan having been involved in the crime.

The CCTV footage shows the suspect's vehicle entering a garage where the attack took place, the court said, adding ammunition found on the backseat of his car matched that discovered at the scene.

Mr McGowan has the right to appeal the ruling within 30 days.
