Cabbie in fare row to confront officials

A taxi driver who cheated a passenger by pretending a high meter charge was an official rate has been ordered to meet the Land Transport Department on Thursday.

The department on Wednesday checked the driver and his vehicle after a video clip of a conversation between the driver and passenger was posted on Pantip.com. It showed the driver taking the Japanese man from Suvarnabhumi airport and charging him what he said was the regular flagfall of 75 baht instead of 35 baht, claiming the new rate had been approved by the department.

Deputy director-general Jirut Visaljit said the driver was identified as SM1 Udon Sasanasupin, who owns the vehicle in the clip.

The department would fine him up to 5,000 baht for overcharging a passenger, revoke his driver's permit for public transport and ban the car from taking passengers at the airport if found guilty, the official said.
