City Hall plans cycling lane boost in capital

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will survey bicycle lanes around Rattanakosin Island this month with a view to increasing the number of cycling routes in the capital.

Government spokesman Yongyuth Maiyalarp said more cycling lanes would help ease traffic congestion and pollution and are supported by the government. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha presided over the launch of a cycling project in the area, Bangkok's so-called Old Town, on Dec 28.

He said work is under way on 12 cycling lanes covering an 8km-area around Rattanakosin Island on Maha Chai, Kalayanamit, Tai Wang, Maha Rat, Na Phra Lan, Na Phra That, Rachini, Phra Sumen, Bowon Niwet, Sanam Chai, Tanao and Phra Athit roads.

He said city staff have attempted to improve cycling lanes by ensuring the surface is even and not broken up by drainage lids.

They have painted lanes, marked warning signs, installed safety equipment, and arranged parking spots for bicycles at key tourist attractions.

They were also taking steps to stop motorists parking across lanes.
