Hunt on for driver who killed cyclist

Police are hunting for a man who fled on foot after he crashed his car into a group of cyclists, killing one and injuring two others on Monday night in Bangkok. 

Thanyakorn Densirimongkol, 31, succumbed to her injuries hours after being admitted to Phaya Thai Navamin Hospital.

The Honda Jazz crashed into the cyclists in front of Bangkok Boulevard housing estate on Ratchada-Ram Intra Road about 8.30pm on Monday, police said.

One of the injured, Nikhom Chenpimai, 36, underwent surgery and is now in the intensive care unit while an unidentified cyclist suffered shoulder, elbow and leg injuries.

Officers found three bicycles and a Honda Jazz with a badly damaged side door at the crash scene. Khok Khram police impounded the car. Witnesses told police the three cyclists were together in the left lane on the outbound section Ratchada-Ram Intra Road.

The car was behind them and was weaving along the road before it hit the group of cyclists. The car then hit a barrier before spinning to a halt on the centre island. According to witnesses, a young man stepped out of the car, took a look at the cyclists and then fled on foot.

The fatal accident in Bangkok was the third involving cyclists in 40 hours. Also on Monday, cyclist Somnuek Tamboonwai, 63, was killed when a lorry hit and dislodged a traffic signboard that fell on him.

He was cycling past the sign on Phahon Yothin Road in Ayutthaya's Wang Noi district when the accident occurred.

On Sunday morning in Chiang Mai, a 23-year-old university student rammed her car into a group of cyclists in Wing Pa Pao district, killing three and injuring two. The drink-driver was charged on Monday with reckless driving resulting in death and injury.

National police chief Somyot Pumpunmuang has ordered police to set up alcohol checkpoints around the clock in the wake of the fatal crashes.
