Majority of poll respondents doubt NCPO's transparency

Just on 76% of respondents in the latest Nida poll thought there were irregularities in the operations of the National Council for Peace and Order led by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and in his government.

Around half of the respondents also doubted the willingness of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NAAC) to investigate them, or were themselves unwilling to answer the question.

Pollsters at the National Institute of Development Administration canvassed 1,250 people aged 18 and over from all walks of life across the country on Jan 24-25.

They reported on Friday that 76.32% of them thought there were irregularities in the way the NCPO and its government operated, while 16.64% had confidence in its transparency. The other 7.04% declined to answer the question, with some saying they were uncertain. 

Asked about the NACC, 49.60% of respondents thought it was willing to investigate the administration, 46.88% thought it would do so only involuntarily, and 3.52% did not reply or were unsure.

As for the neutrality of the NACC, 48.64% of the samples believed it was impartial in examining the government and the NCPO, 42.96% said it was not, and 8.40% refused to answer or were uncertain. 

Just on half, 50.24%, were critical of the NACC for delays in examining the government and NCPO, 35.52% were of the view it did its job as usual, 11.36% said it could act swiftly, and 2.88% did not answer or were not sure. 

The pollsters said 36.08% of the respondents lived in the Northeast, 25.44% on Bangkok’s perimeter and the Central Plains, 18% were in the North, 11.84% in the South and 8.64% actually lived in Bangkok.

They were fairly evenly split, with 57.36% being men and the balance women, while 30.80% had completed high school, 27.68% has a bachelor’s degree, 22% finished elementary education or lower, 8.40% had a diploma, 6.64% a master’s or doctoral degree, and 4.48% declined to give their educational background.
