Suwaphan to head forest panel

Prime Minister's Office minister Suwaphan Tanyuvardhana will be appointed to chair a panel to follow up on state efforts to solve problems involving P-Move, a grassroots network of forest communities.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon, who chairs the government's steering committee on national administration, said the meeting had discussed the P-Move issue and agreed to set up a panel to take charge.

The committee will go through problems raised by P-Move and will go ahead with issues that do not pose legal challenges, he said, adding that those requiring legal amendments may have to wait.

The move came after the grassroots network of forest communities called off its gathering following a 10-day protest in the city.

Following the negotiations, the government signed an MoU with the group, promising to acknowledge five initiatives which would solve various land disputes between the state and local residents.

Defence Ministry spokesman Khongcheep Tantrawanich said the proposed committee has two key roles which are to coordinate with relevant agencies to address P-Move problems and to see to other problems.

He said the committee will comprise representatives from various ministries and members of P-Move.

A draft order setting up the panel is pending approval from Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

On the proposed community land title project, he said the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has been asked to handle the issue.
