EC drafting regulations for election campaigns on social media

The Office of the Election Commission is in the process of drafting regulations on the use of social media by political parties during their campaigns, EC secretary-general Jaroongwit Phumma said on Sunday.

Pol Col Jaroongwit said regulations will provide a guideline for politicians and political parties to follow and ensure fairness and equality.

Electronic media should not be used as a tool by anyone to conduct smear campaigns, he added.

He said the EC office is also preparing regarding budgets, manpower and training to back up the laws on the election of MPs and the acquisition of senators after they are published in the Royal Gazette.

The office will also select replacement poll inspectors in case some of those who have been nominated for the posts are rejected.

The EC is responsible for proposing an election date, said the EC secretary-general.
