CTP scion denies defection rumours

Key Chartthaipattana Party (CTP) member Paradorn Prissanananthakul on Thursday denied reports that he had decided to defect to the Bhumjaithai Party.

It was widely speculated that Mr Paradorn and his brother, Koravee, would join the Bhumjaithai Party, and they were scheduled to announce their new alliance on Nov 16.

Mr Paradorn said he would have to discuss the issue with Mr Koravee and his father, Somsak, who on Wednesday cut ties with the Chartthaipattana Party. He maintained he had never held talks with Bhumjaithai leader Anuthin Charnvirakul about his political career.

"My chances of joining a new party is 50%. There are several aspects to consider and I need to hear what my father has to say," he said.

A source in the CTP said on Thursday Mr Somsak has been at odds with Prapat Photasuthon, the party's secretary-general, and the rift is widening following the death of party strongman Banharn Silpa-archa.

Mr Somsak's sons are highly likely to join the Bhumjaithai Party, whose leader is the first to contact Mr Somsak following his departure from the CTP, the source said.

Newin Chidchob, another Bhumjaithai strongman, also reportedly approached Mr Somsak to join the party under his faction, said the source.

The Pheu Thai Party reportedly approached Mr Somsak to join, but he declined the offer, sources say.

Saksayam Chidchob, secretary-general to the Bhumjaithai Party, said on Thursday the party is fully prepared for the general election and should have no problem with candidate selection.

He said the party's focus is the country, not just its stronghold in Buri Ram, and its candidates are expected to make sure that voters understand its policy platforms.

Asked if the Bhumjaithai Party will form an alliance with the pro-military camp, Mr Saksayam said the party stands with the people and seeks to address their plights.

Mr Saksayam said the party has asked its potential members to gather first-hand information from the people.

The party's priorities include falling crop prices, education, public health issues, he added.

Meanwhile, a source in the Pheu Thai Party said on Thursday that the Bhumjaithai Party are likely to welcome two Pheu Thai defectors.

The source said Prasit Chaiwirattana and Suntaree Chaiwirattana, former MPs for Chaiyaphum, have resigned following a dispute over election candidate selection.

They are unhappy with the role of Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan, who was recently named as the head of the party's election strategy committee, according to the source.
