Royal decree calls for selection of senators

A royal decree calling for the selection of senators has been published in the Royal Gazette with immediate effect.

The decree cites a 2017 constitution clause which requires the Election Commission (EC) to hold the selection of senators under the organic law governing Senate selection.

According to the decree, the selection process must be completed at least 15 days before the general election takes place and the names of the selected senators will be submitted to the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) for appointment.

The first batch of 250 senators will be selected under the provisional clauses of the charter, with the EC responsible for the intra-group vote in which 50 senators will be picked.

The poll agency has already announced regulations involving the selection of 50 senators in the Royal Gazette.

The process will occur at three levels: district, provincial and finally national.
