NONTHABURI: A 61-year-old monk wanted for sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl was arrested at a temple in Bang Bua Thong district on Tuesday after 11 years on the run.

Phra Sorasak Siripattho, or Sorasak Jainok, was apprehended in his living quarters at Wat Srang Mai in tambon Bang Bua Thong by Crime Suppression Division police.

The suspect was wanted on an arrest warrant issued by the Chaiyaphum provincial court on Feb 11, 2008 on a charge of illegally having sex with a girl under 15 years who was not his wife, regardless of whether the girl consented.

He was a monk at a temple in tambon Ban Khai of Chaiyaphum’s Muang district in 2007 when the alleged offence occurred. The girl was a 14 year old student at Mathayom Suksa 2 who lived in her grandmother's house near the temple.

The monk and the girl had become close friends and had sex in this living quarters.

The girl had reportedly climbed in through the window to sleep with him on several occasions. When the girl's family learned of this they filed a complaint at Ban Khai police station.

The monk fled after the arrest warrant was issued in 2008.

During interrogation, Phra Sorasak admitted he had sex with the girl, but insisted it was by mutual consent. After the scandal broke, he had left the monkhood to work in Wang Nam Yen district, Prachin Buri.

He had later re-entered the monkhood at a temple in Prachantakham district of Nonthaburi, then moved to other temples. He had been at the temple in Bang Bua Thong for more than one year when he was caught.

He was expelled from the monkhood and would be handed over to Ban Khai police for legal action.
