Bhumjaithai eyes win at candidate debut event

Bhumjaithai Party leader Anutin Charnvirakul on Thursday said the party hopes to win 375 seats and form the government under his leadership.

Speaking from the Chang International Circuit, and accompanied by key party member Newin Chidchob, the party on Thursday introduced 500 of its candidates-to-be for the upcoming general election in front of more than 10,000 supporters.

It presented 350 candidates for all constituencies, together with 150 party-list candidates.

Mr Anutin told his supporters that the party decided to choose Buri Ram province as the venue for the event as it is the birthplace of the party.

It was a model for increasing development and income in the area, he said, adding the number of tourists in Buri Ram had increased from 800,000 to over 3 million last year due to its successful development model.

He vowed to introduce the "Buri Ram model" to other provinces to curb poverty and improve people's income and assets.

"We have vowed to be the enemy of poverty and separation in the country. We have not created any conflicts that hinder the country from development and economic progress. We have respected the rules and stand beside the people. The party's leader is not one person, but all of the people," he said.

The Bhumjaithai Party has a strong base in Buri Ram and the Isan (Northeast) region, where the party's founder, Mr Newin, has maintained a strong political base for decades. It was founded in 2008 and won 34 seats in the 2011 election.

Mr Newin's brother Saksayam Chidchob, the party's secretary-general, said the party would win the election and set up a new government with the support of the people.

Regarding its policies, he said that besides pushing for the legalisation of cannabis cultivation, the party would set up a rice fund for farmers so they can acquire rice at reasonable prices, offer low interest rates on loans, and help plantations get insured.

The party also supports free online learning, and proposed 10-year loans for students with no guarantor needed, zero interest during the period, and no penalty fee, he said.

It promises to give additional incentives to public health volunteers with maximum salaries of 10,000 baht per month, and increase the number of power plants using energy from sugar cane, palms and other plants.

Bhumjaithai's stance is that intends to side with the winners. It does not plan to join the opposition regardless of who leads the government, its leaders say.

Last May, Chang International Circuit was used to welcome Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and his cabinet during a trip to Buri Ram.
