Thai Chamber of Commerce chairman Kalin Sarasin on Monday urged the government to ensure peace and order in the wake of the polls, to maintain continued growth in investment and tourism.
It would take time for the new government take shape, and keeping the peace during this time would be important if the economy was to continue to grow, he said.
The new government should ensure stability and prevent any conflict, because the safety of lives and property was essential, Mr Kalin said.
The Election Commission was duty-bound to clarify that the general election was organised appropriately and people and mass media should check on that, so that all parties would finally accept the electoral result.
Many policies should continue, and they included the Eastern Economic Corridor and initiatives to increase national competitiveness, Mr Kalin said.
He had no problem with the policies of several parties to raise minimum wages but the government should also improve workers' skills, because machines and robots would replace them.
Thanavath Phonvichai, economic and business forecasting director of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, said it was likely that the Palang Pracharath Party would form the next government, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha would remain in power and would prolong the implementation of existing policies.
The election outcome showed that people wanted political stability and several parties with similar policies could conveniently form a coalition, he said.
