Tida Tawornset, a key member of the red-shirt movement, has demanded a full recount of all votes cast during the general election to ensure public acceptance of the results, alleging irregularities during polling.

After leading members of her anti-electoral fraud group to the Election Commission Office on Wednesday, Mrs Tida said they had sent about 2,000 volunteers to observe the March 24 election at polling units in all regions, and they witnessed many irregularities.

The former leader of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship said people were banned from approaching polling units, and from observing the counting of votes.

Officials at polling units did not show photos of ballot papers deemed to be invalid, and data on the number of marked, valid, invalid and overall ballots was not posted at polling units. In addition, during counting  officials did not loudly read out the number of the party voted for on the ballot papers.

At some polling units, there was no government official present and local residents were allowed to count votes and handle ballot boxes themselves, Mrs Tida said.

"This is not a small issue. If these doubts are not answered, the election results to be announced by May 9 could cause national problems. There will be a deadlock, and people in the country will be in a state of shock because they will not believe the results that the EC announces," she said.
