Indicted political activists released on bail

Prosecutors have indicted five political activists for their role in a rally to demand elections and oppose the National Council for Peace and Order in May last year.

They are Prasit Karutharot, Prajin Thanangkorn, Sriprai Nonsi, Wanchalerm Kunsen and Thanawat Promjak. They are members of a group known as "People Who Want Election".

The five organised an anti-regime rally to mark the fourth anniversary of the coup in front of Thammasat University's Tha Prachan campus and the United Nations' office on Ratchadamnoen Nok Avenue.

They reported to the Office of the Attorney-General on Wednesday.

The court later decided to grant the five activists bail without providing surety bonds. The court did not give any reasons.

One of the activists, Mr Wanchalerm, said he believed he would be granted bail in the same way members of another anti-regime group, led by Sirawith "Ja New" Serithiwat, were given bail without having to place sureties.

"We trust the justice process," said Mr Wanchalerm. "In this initial stage, we would ask the court to release us without placing bonds."

Mr Prajin said he was unfazed by the fact he could end up being jailed.

"If you think about fighting dictators, you have to prepare yourself and your mind," Mr Prajin said.

"If they maliciously imprison us, we would not regret it since we love democracy and want our country to be democratic."
