The new prime minister is likely to be chosen this month and a new government is expected to deliver a policy statement address before the parliament and assume official duties next month, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said.
He was explaining the time frame for the formation of a new government which will take place after parliament officially opens on Friday.
When the Senate speaker and the House speaker are selected and royally approved, the new prime minister is expected to fall into place, Mr Wissanu said.
After the new prime minister forms a cabinet, he will lead the cabinet in taking an oath at a swearing-in ceremony in the presence of His Majesty the King as required by the constitution. The current government will then vacate office.
The new government will then have to deliver its policy statement address before parliament within 15 days of the swearing-in ceremony before it can assume official duties.
Mr Wissanu said that if the new government comprises several coalition parties, it needs to ensure all the parties' policies are incorporated into the policy statement.
Those coalition parties will be dissatisfied if the policy statement highlights only policies of a major party which forms the core of the multi-party government, he said.
Their Majesties the King and Queen will preside over the opening of parliament at the Foreign Ministry's Vithes Samosorn Hall on Friday.
After the official opening, the Senate will choose the Senate speaker and deputies at the auditorium of TOT Plc headquarters on Chaeng Watthana Road.
on Saturday, the House of Representatives will choose the House speaker and deputies.
The selections of the Senate speaker, the House speaker and deputies will then be submitted for royal endorsement some time in the late Saturday afternoon.
A joint meeting of both chambers will then be called to vote for the prime minister after the House speaker and the Senate speaker are royally approved. The date and venue will be announced later.
Despite Mr Wissanu's optimistic view, Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai said he felt concerned that key events might overlap with the Asean Summit to be held in Bangkok between June 20-23. He said if the new prime minister is selected this month, a new cabinet will be formed in early June.
However, he doubted whether the new cabinet will be able to announce a policy statement by June 18.
