Srisuwan gives Watanya share scrutiny all clear

Activist Srisuwan Janya insisted that there is no reason for him to file a complaint against former media executive and newly endorsed party-list MP Watanya Wongopasi of the Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) with the Election Commission (EC) as he found Ms Watanya to be "in the clear".

Ms Watanya is another high-profile MP whose shareholding background was examined by Mr Srisuwan, who subsequently gave her an all clear.

"I treat all political parties the same, including the FFP, the Pheu Thai Party, and the PPRP," he told the Bangkok Post.

"As for Madam Dear [Ms Watanya], I checked all shareholder documents and didn't find her name, which means that she has already transferred her shares," he said.

"As a result, I could not file a complaint."

When asked about family members or spouses who possess media shares, Mr Srisuwan stressed that the rule does not apply in this case.

"People close to her don't have anything to do with her. If the law takes into account family members or spouses, all politicians will face media shareholding charges," he added.

The activist dismissed accusations of double standards and defended his integrity in handling the case.

Ms Watanya, wife of media tycoon Chai Bunnag, though their marriage was not registered, said media shareholding allegations are not a cause for concern for her as she had already transferred all of her media shares before applying as a PPRP member, which she needed to do to comply with the law.

The PPRP list MP was among the three new MPs endorsed by the EC this week, following the election re-run in Chiang Mai's Constituency 8 on Sunday.

The two others were Srinuan Boonlue of the Future Forward Party, who won the most votes in the entire poll, and Jitpas Kridakorn of the Democrat Party.
