The Election Commission (EC) is asking all provincial election commissions to prepare for new local elections, according to copies of the EC's order received by local election regulators.

The election commission of every province is required to begin working together with local administrative bodies in preparing equipment required for an election before Sept 1, according to a letter from the commission dated May 27.

The provincial election regulators are required to report back to the EC by June 15 their progress in the requested election preparations so the EC will have information necessary for making further decisions regarding the new elections, said the order.

The EC's document is reported to be an indication that more elections at the local level are forthcoming. No information on the cost was available.

On April 16, a number of new laws on local elections were published in the Royal Gazette.

The next local elections are expected for the president of the provincial administration organisation of each province, municipality mayors, the president of each tambon administration organisation, the Bangkok governor, and the Pattaya City mayor.
