More House panels tipped

The number of standing committees in the House of Representatives is expected to be increased to ensure all parties have their share of committee chairmen.

A special committee assigned to draw up a set of regulations governing House meetings held its first meeting on Wednesday to select its chairman and deputies.

The panel chose Wichian Chavalit, a Palang Pracharath Party list MP, as chairman, and four deputies -- Pheu Thai Party MP for Nakhon Phanom Phaijit Sriworakhan; Future Forward Party list MP, Chamnan Chanrueang; Democrat Party MP for Krabi, Sakhon Kiewkhong; and Bhumjaithai Party list MP, Supachai Jaisamut.

Mr Wichian said the committee has 20 days to draw up the House meeting regulations which will be modelled on past ones, though the committee will see to it that the new regulations are in line with the constitution.

He also said Wednesday's meeting had agreed that the number of standing committees in the House of Representatives -- which are 35 at present -- should be increased to accommodate a growing number of MPs.

However, the meeting had not yetdecided how many more panels there should be, Mr Wichian said.

A source at the meeting said some members suggested raising the number of standing committees to 38 so that chairmanships can be distributed equally among all parties.

Meanwhile, Deputy Senate Speaker, Gen Singsuek Singphrai, on Wednesday chaired a meeting to draw up regulations for Senate meetings.

The regulations will be presented to the Upper House for consideration on June 25.
