Sinjai says Facebook user defamed her

Actress Sinjai "Nok" Plengpanich yesterday filed a police complaint against a person she says wrote statements on Facebook falsely attributed to her.

The actress, 50, her actor husband Chatchai Plengpanich, 55, and their lawyer, Wirat Kanlayasiri, lodged the complaint with the Technology Crime Suppression Division against the Facebook account holder using the name "Tanawit Kalanthdepan".

Sinjai said the Facebook user had defamed her by writing and sharing politically provocative comments which they claimed the actress had said.

The netizen allegedly used a photo of Sinjai as a profile picture on her account and posted content insulting red-shirt supporters and people in the northeastern provinces on Aug 24.

A message posted on the page, which the user attributed to the actress, read: "The drama series I starred in is suitable for well-educated people, not the proletariat, particularly the Isan [northeast] people or red-shirt followers."

The statement described the actress as "a supporter of the People's Democratic Reform Committee and the National Council for Peace and Order".

Sinjai starred in drama series Patiharn Rak Maimee Wantai (Miracle of Love Immortalised), which aired on Thai PBS channel. The show depicted the life of Gen Romklao Thuwatham, a deputy chief-of-staff with the 2nd Infantry Regiment. He was killed at Kok Wua intersection in April 2010 during a clash between soldiers and red-shirt protesters. The actress played Nicha Thuwatham, Gen Romklao's wife.

Sinjai denied writing the message, which has been shared at least 800 times on the social network and attributed to her, and said it had damaged her reputation.

She said the Facebook user later changed the account name last Friday to "Red Friends Thailand", with a profile picture depicting a man wearing glasses. The name has changed several times since.

The actress warned netizens not to spread false information and said the Facebook user who allegedly defamed her had "sown hatred in society".

The police have pressed charges against the Facebook user, whose identity is currently unknown to them, for spreading false and slanderous information on the social network.
