Thailand, Russia unite to fight terror

Thailand and Russia confirmed yesterday a joint commitment to strengthen security cooperation in combatting international terrorism and transnational crimes, and enhancing cyber security.

Security cooperation was among several issues raised yesterday during a meeting between Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Russian National Security Council chief Nikolai Patrushev that was held at Government House, according to deputy government spokesman Werachon Sukondhapatipak.

During the meeting, both sides expressed satisfaction with the success of a Thai-Russia joint working panel on security issues which saw exchanges of visits and dialogue regarding every aspect of security.

The two countries emphasised the importance of pursuing closer ties to fight terrorism and transnational crime, and to enhance cyber security with Russia, suggesting that cooperation should be pursued at bilateral and multilateral levels.

Gen Prayut said Thailand was willing to join hands with Russia in security issues and proposed that both countries should pay special attention to the exchange of intelligence information to ensure timely responses to challenges and threats.

After Bangkok assumes the Asean chairmanship next year, Gen Prayut also urged Russia to take part in meetings and dialogue to be initiated by Thailand.

The prime minister expressed hope that dialogue which would be instrumental in shaping trade and and economic agreements between Thailand and the Eurasian Economic Union would proceed and lead to Asean's economic growth.

Gen Prayut also touched on the issue of boosting the efficiency of Russian-Thai trade and economic cooperation.

He urged Russia to consider purchasing Thai goods, especially food and agricultural products, while expressing interest in Russia's high-technology products.

During the meeting Gen Prayut also expressed condolences over the deaths in the recent crash of a passenger aircraft near Moscow which killed all 71 people on board.

Mr Patrushev also invited Thailand to attend the IX International Meeting of High Level Officials Responsible for Security Matters to be hosted by Russia during April 24-26 in Sochi, according to the deputy spokesman.

The Russian National Security Council chief met Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon at the Defence Ministry yesterday to discuss security cooperation. He was welcomed by National Security Council secretary-general Wanlop Rugsanoh.
