SONGKHLA: A rubber latex trader and a clerk were shot dead in a gun attack on their pickup truck in Saba Yoi on Saturday morning.

The attack occurred at a bridge in Ban Phruja village of tambon Nod at around 8.45am on Saturday. Police and soldiers went to the scene and found the bullet-ridden red pickup truck on the bridge.

Driver Preecha Phetkaewthong, 34, a rubber latex trader from Saba Yoi district was shot dead at the scene.  His companion, identified later as Ms Sathiya Saisuwan, 33, a clerk, sustained serious gunshot wounds and was rushed to a hospital. She was pronounced dead shortly after, Thai media reported.

The slain trader’s 9mm pistol and some cash were stolen. Police found about 10 spent cartridges from M16 rifles scattered all over the area.

Authorities believed it was the work of southern insurgents wanting to create unrest in the deep South.
