Suspected insurgent killed, policeman hurt in Pattani clash

PATTANI: A suspected insurgent was killed and a policeman hurt in a clash in Nong Chik district on Thursday afternoon.

The clash took place at Ban Bakong village in tambon Bang Khao at about 3.30pm when police rounded up the village to arrest suspects involved in the southern unrest.

During the operation, there was an exchange of gunfire. After the clash, one suspected insurgent was shot dead and a police officer hurt, Thai media reported. The injured officer was rushed to Nong Chik Hospital.

Col Pramot Prom-in, spokesman for Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc) Region 4, said the clash occurred behind Bakong Witthaya School. One policeman, identified as Pol Snr Sgt Maj Yodchai Ketkaew, sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire.

The spokesman said the sergeant's conditions were no longer critical and authorities were checking the identification of the dead man, he added

Media reported that the dead man was identified as Sareesan-umree Dueramae, a southern insurgent.
