Sadom upstages pros to grab Pattaya title

Pattaya: National team star Sadom Kaewkanjana produced a stunning five-under-par 65 final round to win his maiden professional tournament at the three-million-baht Singha Pattaya Open at Burapha Golf and Resort yesterday.

The 19-year-old golfer from Narathiwat upstaged an army of seasoned professionals in the field with a total score of eight-under 272, finishing one stroke ahead of national teammate Kammalas Namuangruk, who closed with a 69.

However, due to their amateur status, neither Sadom nor Kammalas could receive the winner (450,000 baht) or runner-up cheques. Instead it was Sutijet Kooratanapisan (67) and Namchok Tantipokhakul (71), who got to celebrate a bumper pay day with each taking home 363,750 baht for their tied third-place finishes on four-under 276.

Second round leader Chaiphat Koonmark (72) was fifth on two-under 278. He received 171,000 baht.

Kasidit Lepkurte (68) and Settee Prakongvech (72) were a further stroke back at tied-sixth. They each got 126,000 baht.

Overnight leader Pawin Ingkhapradit had a disappointing seven-over 77 and slipped to joint eighth place with Ratchapol Jantavara (70) on even-par 280.

"I'm so happy to get my first win in a professional tournament," said Sadom, who was a member of the national team that won the silver medal at the SEA Games in Malaysia in August.

"I would also like to thank my parents for all their support.

"Also a big thank you to all the sponsors, Singha Corporation, Burapa Golf and Resort and the All Thailand Tour for helping organise such a wonderful tournament," said Sadom, who is off to play a tournament in New Zealand this week.

Sadom added that his next goal is to try to make the Asian Games team in Indonesia next year and then turn professional.

Namchok took the longest hit award with his 322-yard drive on the 12th hole in the final round.

The next tournament of the 2017 Singha All Thailand Tour is the four-million-baht Thongchai Jaidee Foundation, which will be held between Dec 7-10, at Siam Country Club Waterside in Chon Buri.
