Ziege to take Ratchaburi reins

Former Germany defender Christian Ziege has been appointed coach of Thai League 1 side Ratchaburi Mitr Phol, the club announced yesterday.

Ziege replaces Spanish coach Pacheta, who left the Dragons at the end of last season.

The German will begin his Ratchaburi reign next season, which begins in February.

Ziege won two Bundesliga titles and the Uefa Cup during his spell at Bayern Munich from 1990-1997.

The former left-back also played for Italy's AC Milan, English clubs Middlesborough, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, and German team Borussia Moenchengladbach.

On the international stage, he won the European title with Germany in 1996 and played in the 2002 World Cup final when his country lost to Brazil.

After his retirement, Ziege, now 45, became coach of Borussia Dortmund's U17 team and Arminia Bielefeld.

He was also the coach of Germany's U18 and U19 sides.

Sarayuth retires

Former Thailand striker Sarayuth Chaikumdee, who played for nearly 20 years, announced his retirement from the game yesterday.

"I would like to thank the Football Association of Thailand, the national team and the clubs that I played for, as well as the fans," he wrote on his Facebook page.

"I would like to announce that I am quitting as a professional footballer."

Sarayuth, 36, is considered one of the most lethal strikers of his generation.

He was dubbed "Joe Five Yards" because his nickname is "Joe" and he was most dangerous from close range.

Chainat were the last club for Sarayuth, who started his football career with Port.

The much-travelling star also played for Osotspa M-150, Binh Dinh in Vietnam, Bangkok Glass, Army United, Samut Songkhram, Bangkok FC, BEC Tero Sasana, Si Sa Ket, Air Force and Khon Kaen.

He topped the Thai League's scoring charts twice.

He played 49 matches for the national team and scored 31 goals.

He won the SEA Games gold medal in 2003 and lifted the King's Cup twice in 2006 and 2007. Sarayuth last played for Thailand in 2010.
