Thailand U23 team's first training session in Shanghai ahead of their opening AFC U23 Championship game against North Korea on Tuesday was called off yesterday after a heavy downpour left the field muddy.

The War Elephants have been drawn in Group B to face defending champions Japan, North Korea and Palestine in the first round.

The national U23 team have been assigned Jinshan Sports Centre as their training site.

They are also scheduled to play a warm-up game with Australia tomorrow at Qiantan Park Sports Center, also in Shanghai.

Their second Group B match will be against Japan next Friday before they take on Palestine three days later.

The team spent the day strolling around their hotel compound yesterday.

Meanwhile, suspended midfielder Noppol Pholkum is hoping his absence from the Thai squad for the opener against North Korea will not hurt their chances.

"I am very disappointed that I cannot play in the first game because I collected two yellow cards during the qualifying round," said Noppon, who will be serving a one-match suspension on Tuesday.

"However, I have faith in my teammates. If we win the match against North Korea, it will boost the team's confidence before games against Japan and Palestine."

Thailand reached the final stage of the championship after finishing second behind Malaysia in a qualifying event in Bangkok in July last year.

RAJEVAC'S FUTURE

Football Association of Thailand (FAT) president Pol Gen Somyot Poompunmuang has confirmed an amended contract has been handed over to national team coach Milovan Rajevac.

Somyot said the FAT is waiting for a feedback from the Serb.

"He [Rajevac] has sought an extension to the existing contract and also called for a higher salary," he said.

"We have given the coach a draft of the amended contract for his comments.

"But we want him to revise his target for the team as well. We have never won the Asian Cup or the Asian Games gold medal, so we want to know if he can deliver that."

Somyot also confirmed yesterday that Rajamangala National Stadium will be the venue for the 46th King's Cup tournament from March 23-25.

After attending a meeting of the tournament organsing committee yesterday, the FAT chief said: "Right now, we are ready to host the prestigious event and the FAT has once again joined hands with Thai Rath TV to broadcast all matches live.

"As for the participating countries, we will only invite the teams who have higher Fifa ranking than the Thai national side."
