Track gets a big thumbs up

MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez said he likes the Chang International Circuit after an inspection ride around the Buri Ram track yesterday.

Top riders are in Buri Ram this week for a three-day testing, the second of the year after Sepang in Malaysia last month, which begins today at the venue.

The inaugural MotoGP race in Thailand will be held at the same venue in October. The Sports Authority of Thailand struck a three-year agreement with MotoGP promoter Dorna last year.

Honda rider Marquez, who clinched his fourth MotoGP world title last year, got his scooter out to see the track's layout yesterday and the 24-year-old Spaniard explained why he liked what he saw.

"Overall I like the track. People compare it to Sepang. The truth is both places are hot but the difference is humidity," said Marquez.

"It is quite a short track with two long straights. It gets interesting midway through where it requires techniques, which I like.

"We'll see what happens tomorrow!"

Meanwhile nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi and his Yamaha teammate Maverick Vinales arrived in Buri Ram on Wednesday night.

The Italian Rossi was critical of the idea of having a race at the Chang International Circuit, saying he is "not very happy" about going to Thailand if the "not interesting" venue joins the MotoGP calendar.

"I was in Thailand for Yamaha two years ago and the track is not interesting," the 38-year-old Rossi was quoted as saying in June last year.

"It's very boring, has not a lot of corners, just long straights. I think it's not the best place to go.

"And also where is the track is quite bad, it's far from everything."

Rossi's bid for a 10th world title was scuppered last year after he suffered a double tibia and fibula fracture in September although he still returned to competition after just three weeks.
