War Elephants get breathless draw at Asian Games

A last-gasp goal by substitute Supachai Chaided earned Thailand a deserved 1-1 draw with Qatar in their opening match of the men's football competition at the Asian Games in Indonesia Tuesday evening.

Supachai's thunderous header in injury time cancelled out Hazem Shehata's sixth minute strike.

Here are highlights from the match. Thailand are in blue.

In the other Group B game, Asian U23 champions Uzbekistan hammered Bangladesh 3-0.

Qatar got off to a fast start with Shehata beating Thailand goalkeeper Nont Muangngam from close range after just six minutes.

After falling behind, Worrawoot Srimaka's men regrouped and piled the pressure on their opponents.

Thailand captain and striker Chenrop Samphaodi sent a shot wide and Nopphon Phonkam saw his attempt saved by Qatar goalkeeper Mohammed Al Bakri.

The War Elephants lacked sharpness up front as they squandered numerous clear chances.

Just before half-time, Qatar forward Meshaal Al Shamari went clear but Nont did well to block his shot.

Thailand started strongly in the second half and forced Al Bakri to make a couple of fine saves.

Following a string of good saves, Al Bakri got injured and was replaced by Marwan Badreldin with 30 minutes to go.

Like Bakri, Badreldin also put up a good performance, denying Thailand an equaliser on several occasions.

But Badreldin could do nothing when Thanasit Siriphala's cross perfectly found Supachai who sent the ball into the back of the net in the dying moments.

Thailand take on Bangladesh Thursday while Uzbekistan play Qatar.

There are six groups in the men's football tournament at Jakarta and Palembang.

The top two teams of each group and four best third-placed teams advance to the next round.

Thailand have never won a football medal at the quadrennial event but finished fourth four times in 1990, 1998, 2002 and 2014.

The men's football tournament at the Asian Games is a U23 competition with each team allowed to field three overage players.

Worrawoot did not pick an overage player saying he wanted to give youngsters opportunities.

Earlier Tuesday, Asian U23 champions Uzbekistan enjoyed a light workout in their 3-0 win against Bangladesh.

Bangladesh goalkeeper Ashraful Islam Rana had to make several saves to prevent his team from conceding early.

However, Uzbekistan's pressure saw Zabikhillo Urinboev finding the back of the net in the 23rd minute.

Ravshan Khaydarov's charges found their second goal in the 57th minute with Dostonbek Khamdamov on target.

It was soon followed by the third, with Ikromjon Alibaev's effort sealing the three points in the 66th minute.
