Jazz, Poom aim to shine at Maybank

Kuala Lumpur: Jazz Janewattananond and Poom Saksansin will lead the Thai challenge at the Maybank Championship which tees off today.

The other Thais in the US$3 million event at Saujana Golf and Country Club include Thongchai Jaidee, Prayad Marksaeng and Prom Meesawat.

Jazz, 23, is one of Thailand's hottest players at the moment after claiming his third Asian Tour victory in Singapore in January.

He has taken a two-week break and is fresh for this week's event.

"I'm feeling really good," Jazz said.

"Everyone knows that this is one of the top events in Asia and everyone has to try to play well here. I took a break to prepare for this week, try to get my mind fresh."

Poom has also won three times on the Asian Tour.

The 25-year-old shot to prominence at the Asian Tour's season-ending Indonesian Masters in December when he beat a field that included England's Justin Rose and Sweden's Henrik Stenson to win the title.

Meanwhile, Malaysia's Gavin Green believes the comforts of home will give him the opportunity to put up a performance befitting of his status as his country's No.1 golfer in the tournament co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.

Green, who has been plying his trade mainly in Europe since claiming the 2017 Asian Tour Order of Merit crown, is playing in a home event for the first time in almost a year.

Newly appointed Europe's Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington is meanwhile playing in his first competitive event after suffering a broken wrist at home late last year.

"I wouldn't say the wrist is 100 percent now. It might not be 100 percent for about nine months, or at least another six or seven months," he said.

"Traditionally, the Malaysian Open [the tournament's former name] was my first event of the season, if you go back 20 years, so it's my first event this year and I'm looking forward to that good karma, let's say.

"The greens are firm. It looks difficult to me."
