Buriram United duo of Supachai Chaided and Supachok Sarachat yesterday helped Thailand settle an old score with Indonesia, handing their rivals a 4-0 thrashing in their first 2020 AFC U23 Championship qualifier.

Thailand, who are already through to the final stages of the tournament as hosts, proved too strong for their opponents at Hanoi's My Dinh National Stadium.

Alexandre Gama's Thailand were defeated 2-1 by Indra Sjafri's Indonesia in the final of the 2019 AFF U22 Championship last month.

Indonesia suffered a pre- tournament blow when their starlet Ezra Walian, who has previously represented the Netherlands in an international age-group event, was declared ineligible by Fifa.

Captain Shinnaphat Leeaoh made no mistakes as he guided a 21st-minute free-kick from Worachit Kanitsribampen into the net with a consummate header to put Thailand in front.

Supachai was tripped inside the box by an Indonesian defender early in the second half. The lanky Thai striker stepped up to take the resultant penalty and doubled Thailand's advantage over Team Garuda.

Supachai grabbed his second goal of the match with a simple-but-timely tap in on 70 minutes.

Then it was the turn of his Buriram teammate Supachok to impress the crowd at the venue with a sublime drive from near the top of the box to wrap up the 4-0 rout.

Thailand coach Alexandre Gama said he was not surprised by the scoreline and added that it would serve as "a morale-booster for the team."

The War Elephants play their next Group K match against Brunei tomorrow.
