Thailand U23 boss Alexandre Gama is likely to become the coach of struggling Thai League 1 side SCG Muang Thong United.

The Kirins, coached by South Korean Yoon Jong-Hwan, are at the bottom of Thai League 1 and were eliminated from the League Cup.

Yoon succeeded Phairoj Bovornwattanadilok, who quit Muang Thong after only five league games this season due to the club's poor results.

However, Yoon has failed to take the former Thai League 1 champions out of the relegation zone and reports claim the Kirins want to replace him with Gama.

Football Association of Thailand (FAT) president Somyot Poompunmuang admitted on Wednesday he had discussed the matter with Gama.

He said he had asked the Brazilian coach to oversee the U23 team at the Merlion Cup in Singapore from June 5-8 before making a decision.

"After the tournament, we will allow him to decide whether he wants to quit the U23 team," Somyot said.

FAT technical chief Witthaya Laohakul said he was disappointed by Gama's imminent departure as he wanted him to have a role in the senior national team.

Gama, 51, coached Buriram United from 2014-2016 and guided them to win the league title twice as well as the FA Cup and League Cup.

Gama steered Chiang Rai United to two FA Cup and one League Cup titles before joining the Thai U23 team last year.
