Thais come a cropper, fall to Japan

Thailand fell to hosts Japan 3-0 in the final Pool 15 game of the FIVB Nations League in Tokyo on Thursday.

The Thais lost 22-25, 22-25, 14-25 in an entertaining encounter at Musashino Forest Sports Plaza.

It was Thailand's eighth loss in 12 matches at the end of week four. Japan improved their record to 7-5. Thailand are 12th in the 16-team standings while Japan are sixth.

Onuma Sittirak and Ajcharaporn Kongyot had 11 points each for Thailand while Ai Kurogo led Japan with 21 points.

Thailand will head to Russia next week for the fifth and final preliminary round.

In the early Pool 15 game, Brazil beat Serbia 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-15) to end the fourth week with a perfect record.

Gabriela Braga Guimaraes led Brazil's scoring with 21 points, followed by Ana Beatriz Correa with 12.

Katarina Lazovic was Serbia's top scorer with 13 points.

Brazil (9-3) are third in the standings while Serbia (5-7) are ninth.

In Jiangmen, China, Ebrar Karakurt scored 30 points as Turkey came back from two sets down to beat Poland 3-2 (22-25, 18-25, 25-16, 25-20, 15-12) in Pool 16.

With the victory, Turkey (10-2) returned to the top of the standings while Italy (9-2), who were due to play Russia later last night in Perugia, slipped to second. Poland (7-5) are seventh.

The top-six teams will qualify for the final round in Nanjing, China.
