Thailand and Laos are planning regular bus services between Udon Thani and Vang Vieng, a popular tourist spot in the landlocked country, before the end of the year.

Transport Co president Jirasak Yaovatsakul said on Tuesday the firm would use 44-seat, air-conditioned buses on the 288-kilometre-long route which could make a debut by the end of this year.

The line starts at the Udon Thani central bus station, stops to pick up passengers at Udon Thani airport and go to Vang Vieng through the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge in Nong Khai on a seven-hour trip with the ticket price of 320 baht.

The service is a joint operation with Malany Transport Co, a Lao bus operator, he added.

“We will initially be deploying only one bus per day. If demand calls for more buses, they will be introduced accordingly,” he said.

Vang Vieng is located about 150 kilometres north of Vientiane. It is mid-way between the Lao capital and Luang Prabang.

The town is popular, especially among backpackers.
