Outdated Views On Gender Need Updating

Despite Thailand's reputation as a country with a high number of female CEOs, now and again I'm reminded that there's still more work to be done to fix the outdated view on genders and the roles of women in Thailand. Here are some examples that would have feminists and SJW triggered.

1. Minister of Social Development and Human Security Juti Krairerk recently said, "Every woman has wife and mother DNA within them. Please find them and use them to benefit society", to an audience of women at a special lecture on the female leaders in the 21st century.

For sure, a well-intentioned message to encourage all women to do their part in improving society but badly worded. Even after reading his full message, I still find it somewhat insensitive and surely outdated. Not every woman has the same sexual orientation. Not every cis woman wants to fulfil those two roles. A woman can be whatever she wants to be and still contribute to society. At the risk of sounding like an SJW, this could be considered an example of mansplaining, too. A man shouldn't tell what women should do with their lives.

2. A mother is an assistant to the family head (father) and does all house chores and provides warmth and love to every member of her family. Some mothers have to work outside the home to supplement income brought in by fathers.

The most worrying part about this is that it comes from a social study textbook for Pratom 2 pupils used at a school that is supposed to be one of the best in the country.

3. "Women are like dolls. You can slap it, hit it, take its clothes off or do whatever you please with it. But remember a real man doesn't play with dolls."

It was posted as an IG story by a student club of King Mongkut's University of Technology North Bangkok. This quote is said to have originated from illegal motorcycle racers, hence, its macho and politically incorrectness nature. But, whoever runs the club's social media should have better judgement. There are several problems with it. Women ≠ dolls. No one has the right to lay a hand on any woman much less do anything more than that. Lastly, men can play with dolls, too. I know you want to say that a real gentleman doesn't harm women but your analogy sucks big time.
