Selling pie or the sky?

Re: "THAI takes up new revenue strategies", (Business, Oct 30).

THAI's new marketing strategies aim to cut its massive losses. The strategies include airing popular TV soap operas, opening a THAI Shop at Takashimaya, providing snacks to Siriraj Hospital and entering a bid to cater for the Land Transport Organisation's inter-city buses. These are textbook examples of remedial measures to improve revenues.

As far as the saying "Do what you can do best and get rid of what you are not good at", goes, wouldn't it be better for THAI to concentrate its efforts and expertise on selling puffs, pies and other local products and get rid of their aviation service for the sake of the shareholders?

Praise for Thammasat

Re: "Thammasat confirms Pattaya budget", (Business, Oct 30).

In my book, Thammasat University (TU) has always been regarded as the people's university. Like all academic institutes, controversy is the norm but for TU, they always end up with social and academic advancement. The successful expansion of TU to the Rangsit district plus the establishment of a hospital to cater to people in the Rangsit industrial area is truly an example of why this institution never rests on its laurels.

Your headline news highlighting another greenfield area that TU is pursuing in Pattaya and adding to the infrastructure of the government's Eastern Economic Corridor project is praiseworthy.

The intended 5-billion-baht project that includes a hospital with 300 to 600 beds is spearheaded by an institution with a record of success and is deservedly highlighted.

Passengers come first

Re: "THAI takes up new revenue strategies", (Business, Oct 30).

Nothing will help THAI unless the management works hard to get rid of "attitude" problems, both at the management level, and of course among airline crew, especially pilots, as was just demonstrated on the Zurich-Bangkok flight recently. If THAI as a whole does not realise passengers come first, THAI should be abandoned altogether.

The late Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart stores, once said, "There is only one boss -- the customer. And he can fire everybody in the company, from the chairman down, simply by spending his money elsewhere." I teach this as the opening statement to all students taking business courses.

Cops and crackdowns

Re: "Provincial acting top cop makes impact", (BP, Oct 30).

As is so often the case in Thailand, a high-ranking police officer announced a crackdown on illegal activities. To me, this always translates into enforcement of existing laws and a purge against criminals. But, it always seems to imply that crime is not being tackled until a crackdown is implemented.

In the above-referenced article it was announced that 215 people were arrested by the police in a crackdown on serious crime in Ayutthaya over the past four-week period. Alleged offences include drugs, firearms and loansharking. It begs the question: What were these people and the police doing before the crackdown?

Which way to jump?

Re: "Coup ban --can?", (PostBag, Oct 30).

If Mr Setter wishes to live in a country run by kindergartners, it is his business. There is already enough chaos in many countries run by inept politicians, the United States included. President Trump may be commander-in-chief of the American military, and if he says "jump", they will indeed jump. But one wonders these days which way the generals will choose to jump. I wonder how Gen Prayut would handle a similar situation that President Trump finds himself involved in, if thousands of migrants would start massing for a march to the Thai border?

Correction

There was an error in the letter, "Be humble", by HHB published in PostBag yesterday. The two leaders the writer intends to make a reference to are Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and Thai statesman Prem Tinsulanonda, not the Chinese and Japanese leaders as the reference suggested. We regret the error.
